Thoughts are giant-powers. They are more powerful than electricity. They control your
life, mould your character, and shape your destiny. Mark how one thought expands into many thoughts, within a short time. Suppose you get an idea to set up a tea-party for your friends. The one thought of ‘tea’ invites instantaneously the
thoughts of sugar, milk, tea-cups, tables, chairs, table-cloth, napkins, spoons, cakes, biscuits, etc. So, this world is nothing but the expansion of thoughts. The expansion of thoughts of the mind towards the objects is bondage; and, the renunciation of thoughts is liberation. You must be very watchful in nipping the thoughts in the bud. Only then will you be really happy. Mind tricks and plays. You must understand its nature, ways and habits. Then only can you control it very easily.

What are decibels?

A decibel is the unit for measuring the intensity, loudness, of a sound. Today it is possible to study noise scientifically by means of electrical instruments. Chief among them is the sound meter, or noise meter, a device that changes sound into electrical signals and then measures the signals in terms of decibels. One decibel is about the smallest difference sound intensity that the normal human ear can detect. Twenty decibels mark sound one hindered times as strong as a ten decibel sound. Thirty decibels mark sound a thousand times as strong as a ten-decibel sound, and so on. A man’s heart beat creates a sound of a little more than 10 decibels. The purring of a cat is about the same as a whisper- 25 to 30 decibels. A single typewriter accounts for 40 decibels. A few other common noises are rated in decibels as follows barking dog – 65; piano practice-75; average motor truck- 80; loud shouting-85; pneumatic riveter- 105.

Why does the whistle change its note as the train passes by?

You have probably noticed that as an express train whizzes by, the pitch of the locomotive whistle changes. It sounds much higher as it approaches you than after it has passed. Yet the whistle is blowing the same note all the time. Each single vibration of the whistle pushes against the air, compressing it, and then pulls back-crating a sound-wave. The distance between each two compressions is the wave length of the sound. Pitch depends on wave-length: the shorter the wave length, the higher the sound. Let us suppose that our locomotive whistle actually blows, or vibrates, with a 500-cycle note. This means that every second the whistle sends out 500 pulses, or sound-waves, into the surrounding air. The wave-length of a 500-cycle note is about 2 feet- each pulse travels about 2 feet away before the next one is emitted.

Why does water always seem shallower that it is?

When we turn of the water in the bathtub, and our cake of soap falls into the water and sinks to the bottom, a curious illusion occurs. If we plunge our hand into the water to seize the soap, we find that it is not where it seems to be. The eye is deceived into believing that the water is much shallower that it really is. Pebbles and fish in a pool always appear to be nearer to us than they really are. The reason is that the rays of light reaching s from the object at the bottom of the water do not come straight to us, as they would if there were no water between us and the object. The light from the object travels straight as long as it is in the water, but it is emerges obliquely from the water into the air it is bent downward toward the surface.
